Overview
The Institute for Seri Biotechnological Research (ISBR), located at the Kodathi campus in Bengaluru, is a premier national research institute operating under the administrative and technical control of the Central Silk Board (CSB), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
Originally established in 1993 as the Seri-Biotech Research Laboratory (SBRL) under the National Sericulture Project, the institute was created to address intricate biological challenges in the silk industry using modern biotechnology. Today, its mandate has expanded beyond traditional textile productivity to position silk as a cutting-edge frontier material for advanced technological applications.
Current and future research at CSB-ISBR is centered on integrating functional genomics, molecular genetics, proteomics, transgenics, and biomaterials science to enhance silkworm productivity, resilience, and silk quality. The institute employs genomics-assisted breeding and host-pathogen interaction studies to develop climate-resilient, disease-resistant silkworms, while advancing recombinant technologies and precision molecular diagnostics. Concurrently, research focuses on valorizing silk fibroin, sericin, and sericulture byproducts into high-value biomaterials for regenerative medicine, drug delivery, cosmetics, and industrial biotechnology, thereby promoting a sustainable circular bioeconomy based on sericulture.
