Molecular Testing Service of Silkworm Pathogens
Diagnostics & Molecular Pathology DivisionSericulture, the rearing of silkworms for silk production, forms a vital agro-based industry worldwide but faces threats from viral, bacterial, and parasitic diseases that severely impact global output. Traditional pathogen detection via microscopy and culturing lacks accuracy and speed. Over the past decade, genomic DNA- and RNA-based molecular techniques have transformed sericulture by enabling rapid, precise identification of pathogens. These methods offer superior sensitivity, specificity, reduced turnaround time, and detection of unculturable agents compared to conventional approaches.
CSB-ISBR Diagnostic Services
The Molecular Testing Laboratory of the CSB-Institute for Seri-Biotechnological Research (CSB-ISBR) is a specialized biological testing facility engaged in the molecular characterization and detection of silkworm pathogens, including Nosema spp., Nucleopolyhedrovirus, Cypovirus, Iflavirus, and Bidensovirus. Given the critical role of molecular testing, CSB-ISBR extends diagnostic services to stakeholders, particularly Central Silk Board (CSB) units engaged in seed production and rearing.
Quality Policy
CSB-ISBR is committed to providing accurate, reliable, and scientifically validated testing services for the detection of silkworm pathogens using molecular techniques.
Quality Objective
The laboratory aims to provide customers and stakeholders with accurate, reliable, and technically valid results.
Sample Collection & Submission Instructions to Customers
Sampling shall be carried out by farmers, industry personnel, authorized CSB staff, and other stakeholders using clean tools and suitable containers, with appropriate precautions to prevent cross-contamination. Each lot shall be sampled independently and clearly labelled to ensure proper traceability.
Sample Quantity
For each sampling lot, approximately 5 silkworm larvae or 3–5 adult moths shall be collected and transported to CSB-ISBR, Kodathi at the earliest through courier or Speed Post.
Storage & Dispatch
Samples may be stored at 4°C under secure conditions until dispatch to maintain biological integrity.
Inspection & Quality SOPs
Upon receipt, samples are verified for quantity, condition, and container integrity. Putrefied, contaminated, or improperly labelled samples may be rejected. Accepted samples are preserved and processed under strict laboratory SOPs.
Sample Collection E-Form Required
Please complete the official sample collection E-Form and submit it along with your physical samples.
